Corporal Punishment
Corporal punishment may be used as a discipline management technique in accordance
with the student code of conduct. Corporal punishment is limited to spanking or paddling
the student and is governed by the following guidelines:
1.
The student is told the reason for the corporal punishment.
2.
Corporal punishment may be administered only by the principal and other
administrators.
3.
The instrument to be used will be approved by the principal.
4.
Corporal punishment will be administered in the presence of one other district
professional employee and out of view of other students.
A record will be maintained of each instance of corporal punishment.
Detention
A student may be assigned detention outside of school hours (for not more than four
hours) on one or more days if the student violates the school's code of conduct.  The
parent will be notified when a student has been placed in detention.  Saturday school may
be used for repeated code of conduct violations.
Discipline
The district developed a new student code of conduct in July.  The new student code of
conduct adopted by the Board, this handbook, and current statutes will govern student
discipline and will supersede policies adopted by the Board within the context of
previous law. The Board, the principal or other appropriate administrator will continue to
be authorized to consider the circumstances of each disciplinary situation, including the
following factors:
1.   The seriousness of the offense
2.   The student's age
3.   The frequency of misconduct
4.   The student's attitude
5.   The potential effect of the misconduct on the school environment
State law requires certain disciplinary actions for certain offenses. Complete details may
be found in the Borden County I.S.D. Student Code of Conduct.
Disruptions
In order to protect student safety and sustain an educational program free from disruption,
state law permits the district to take action against any person, student or non-student—
who:
Interferes with the movement of people in an exit, an entrance, or a hallway of a
district building without authorization from an administrator.
